Préface.

Pour la septième année consécutive, la Fondation d’entreprise Hermès s’engage en faveur de la création dans le domaine des arts de la scène à travers New Settings. Avec ce programme, la Fondation accompagne des spectacles inédits dans leur forme, résultats d’un chemin exploratoire ancré dans la réalité de notre époque. La Fondation est présente dès leur phase de production et leur assure des dates de représentation en collaborant avec des institutions culturelles complices en Île de France et à New York, pour certains d’entre eux. C’est ainsi que tout au long de l’automne 2017 seront présentés 16 spectacles aux formats et esthétiques différents, représentatifs de l’éclectisme des voies suivies par les artistes d’aujourd’hui. À la lisière entre les arts du spectacle et les arts visuels, nombreux sont ceux qui, par cette « indiscipline », inventent de nouvelles écritures scéniques, surprenantes et passionnantes. Nous sommes convaincus que le temps de l’élaboration de la création, traversé par ces périodes d’incertitudes fécondes où l’on teste avant de « poser » la forme, nécessite au plus haut point d’être favorisé. Ce travail au plateau, en atelier ou en studio, où la matière s’esquisse et se transforme, a besoin de se dérouler dans des conditions favorables. Notre souhait est de favoriser ce moment décisif, alors même que les artistes peinent trop souvent à finaliser leurs productions, d’autant plus lorsqu’ils s’engagent dans des chemins de traverse par rapport aux codes esthétiques dominants. Certains spectacles soutenus cette année explorent des modes de représentation qui placent le spectateur dans un nouveau rapport vis-à-vis de l’oeuvre. La Fondation porte également son attention à l’élargissement du public et souhaite accompagner les artistes qui inventent de nouvelles formes de citoyenneté dans la rencontre même avec l’oeuvre. En partenariat avec des structures culturelles complices, la Fondation d’entreprise Hermès favorise ainsi la prise de parole des artistes au sein de la Cité. Révéler, éclairer et transmettre ce qu’exprime aujourd’hui l’art, tel est également notre volonté. Catherine Millet, Anaël Pigeat et toute l’équipe d’art press ont porté leur attention sur New Settings. Ils sont désormais les acteurs de cette volonté partagée pour notre plus grand plaisir. This is the seventh consecutive year that the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès has enacted its commitment to the contemporary theater arts through New Settings. The foundation’s programming encourages brand new forms of performances born out of a process of experimentation and at the same time thoroughly rooted in our times. The foundation supports the production of these works and ensures their public performance through its partnerships with cultural institutions in the greater Paris area and even as far away as New York. Autumn 2017 will see the presentation of sixteen shows in a diversity of formats and representing different aesthetics, a reflection of the eclecticism characterizing the approaches of today’s artists. Many of

these pieces were conceived on the borderline between the performing and visual arts, disciplined yet free of the boundaries of a single discipline. The results are fascinating and surprising. We are convinced that there is a tremendous need to assist the protracted process of creation, with its periods of fertile uncertainty and testing before finally coming together. The best possible conditions must be provided for work carried out in a rehearsal hall, workshop or studio as ideas are sketched out and material transformed. Our mission is to be there for artists at the decisive moment when they are struggling to bring something new into being, especially when they take less traveled roads and challenge established norms. Some of the performances given backing this year explore roads of representation that bring viewers into a new relationship with what they are seeing. The foundation is also concerned with broadening the audience for such work. The aim is to support artists who invent new forms of citizenship through people’s interaction with art. In partnership with like-minded cultural organizations, the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès strives to help artists play their active role in contemporary society. We also want to reveal, spotlight and promote today’s art. Catherine Millet, Anaël Pigeat and the whole team at art press have given New Settings their utmost attention. We are delighted that they, too, are actors in our joint endeavor. Our thanks to everyone involved.
