Paloma Blanchet-Hidalgo ——— Rhizomes, atolls and spider silk are the images found in this carte blanche given to the Argentine Tomás Saraceno. ON AIR addresses the challenges of the Anthropocene era, where human activities have influenced the terrestrial ecosystem. The assessment is not new: financial and industrial appetites threaten the Earth and its ecologies, a terrifying race to the abyss. Here one of the many challenges is to design a planet finally free of fossil fuels. Shifting and mapping the gaze, ON AIR draws material, poetic conceptualism, from the space of the Palais de Tokyo. The exhibition merges several wonders: that of matter and of the imagination, where the most unique cosmogonies are expressed. This is reflected in Aerocene, a transdisciplinary open-source project conceived by Saraceno: investigating aerial mobility, the artist sketches an era without solar panels or batteries, where environmental awareness prevails. Elsewhere animals and minerals intermingle, star dust and carbon dioxide float. Into these motifs— visual as well as narrative—is woven an anatomy of moving ecosystems. Abstracted inspirations that grow and branch out, partition- ing an organic universe, a symbiosis between spaces that is intensely felt. The various collaborators—institutions, activists, musicians, critics and researchers—provide a reflection interspersed with references to the life sciences where ethics is linked to sensory experience. Sculpture, image and installation are part of the same experimental enquiry. In the flux, the mineral and animal kingdoms converge, a universe where all the senses are invoked. A way of combining spaces of projection and introspection, of dislocating the sensory devices at work, and of exposing the paradoxes of artistic work. Far from ordinary compartism, ON
AIR prescribes a cross-disciplinary approach to art and politics. All these aspects are captured in the incisive scenography, fostering multiple points of view and mirror effects. From one work to another, the same density, the same magnetism; the pieces gathered together constitute archipelagos circumventing our reference points, so many paradoxical worlds that can unfold between matter and immateriality. Helped by the density and the precision of form, Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel’s curatorial project underlines the singularity of the Palais deTokyo site. In addition to the exhibition, there is a full programme of workshops, concerts and conferences: ‘cosmic jam sessions’ devoted to energy—solar, wind, infrared rays. Together, the whole develops parallel narratives, weaving invisible links, driving a disjunction of reality as much as a metamorphosis of place. And the nimble eye travels through these webs into the unknown.
