MONTRICHER / OSLO
This exhibition – the third devoted to the books of Anselm Kiefer, after those of Tübingen in 1990 and the BnF in 2015 – offers a journey through all the practices developed by the artist around the book since Für Jean Genet in 1969, accompanied by xylographs (Sol Invictus Elagabal, Für Adalbert Stifter, Bergkristall) to shed light on his favourite themes. It differs from the previous ones by the presentation of very recent books, the Welten-Inseln ( Universe – Islands), started in 2017, where the watercolour (sometimes in the form of dripping) and the charcoal draw on cardboard coated with plaster abstract figures unrepresentative of Kiefer’s work. Only the title suggests recognisable territorialized entities, or constellations, harking back to the cosmogonic dimension of his intellectual universe. On the other hand, the catalogue ( Anselm Kiefer, Books and Xylographs, 532 p., 75 CHF), conceived as an actual tool for accompanying the visit, reproduces for the first time all the pages of the books on display, including the many blank pages of 20 Jahre Einsamkeit ( 20 Years of Solitude), where one can sometimes just make out traces of Kiefer’s sperm. This system breaks away from the discourses maintained by the artist on the secret, the closed book, witness to his fascination with the reason for the illegibility of the Holy Book. As if it were a question of confessing that, even in the inert, inaccessible state of his lead libraries, every book calls to be read.
