Ruti De Vries
What relationship do we have with the more familiar objects that surround us? This question posed by Ruti De Vries is all the more complex when the objects claim autonomy and escape our control. From then on, the only possible encounter is in an unfathomable in-between, open to multiple narrations, in unknown timespaces. Here and there, Ruti De Vries collects abandoned objects. By welcoming them into her studio, she snatches them from their anonymity. She doesn’t choose them: it’s as if they present themselves to her, like autonomous, free beings, endowed with a voice or a certain gaze. There is nothing inert about these objects. Ruti De Vries shares everything with these objects that occupy, invade, inhabit her
studio. There is a real cohabitation. She shares most of her time with them, much more than the time of an exhibition. She works them, embroiders them, sews them and unsews them to the point where nothing less than a community is woven, from which she then derives a narration of life entirely animated by the "in-between" of the human and object. From this comes a narration of life together, animated by the in-between of the human and the object. An "in-between" that some people describe, psychologically, as the quest for a protective place, a quest qualified by this attitude of humans, oh so common, to establish a reassuring home, to constitute it with things they can recognize and which correspond to them. But Ruti De Vries never abandons her found objects to this comforting, soothing dialectic, where everything would make sense in a previously delimited place and where her gaze alone would prevail over the objects surrounding her. Quite differently, Ruti De Vries sees, in the need to tear singular objects away from the imperturbable and continuous passage of time, another dynamic, that of a powerful exposure, her own and that of her gathered objects, to perpetual instability, to the heterogeneity of the communal and the community. Everything happens as if the in-between, invented between the human and this multitude of found objects, were an abyss where human beings and objects are incessantly dragged into the risk of not finding, or retrieving one another, of not mutually constituting one another or pairing up, to assemble one another or to join forces. As if this in-between projected them into the impossible encounter, giving rise to another possible encounter. This is why Ruti De Vries always emphasizes those moments when her objects – those with which she shares everything – overwhelm her, surprise her and escape her. Her objects – though one should rather say her figures – are never fully evaluable, calculable, situatable and, thus, don’t lend themselves to our measure. They’re not, strictly speaking, objects in the traditional sense of the word, placed there, in front of us, subject to our gaze and manipulation. Because they never stop playing tricks on her, like a way of re-shuffling the in-between between human and objects. They invent unexpected strata of meanings of the communal, of the community, still ineffable. This in-between opens infinities of space and time of unprecedented performances, each time new, singular.
AN IN-BETWEEN
What performances? Those of a future yet to be written between humans and their objects and where, perpetually, the in-between would always be on its way, the future without a fixed present. A future where the present would always be different, displaced, shifted, renewed, metamorphosed. Whenever it would form itself, this in-between would project itself out of itself into another, supplementary call to reinvent itself. Here, in a way, is its law without law, which takes shape without ever being embodied in a form: always more of a present to come than the present come; always more of an experience to live than the lived experience. To follow this abyssal dynamic, where the figures of Ruti De Vries never take pleasure in what they are for us, are not confined to what they represent for the human – which is limited by a structure of anticipation where the real is only conjugated with the meaning that has been prefigured for it – one could even begin to believe in an in-between. This interweaving of human beings and objects would continue to project beyond all the expecting structures so strongly anchored in the historical becoming of the human and so deeply rooted in the history of merely representational thought. An inbetween of multiple exposures unfolding more than one meaning, opening to an ever more colossal occurrence of a greater number of meanings that never expect a concatenation in any unified or unitary sense. This is why Ruti De Vries’ figures require living in a different space than that of traditional representation or conventional exhibition. They command, in other words, an entirely invented spatiality, where their autonomy can be allowed to be expressed freely, according to their singular language. With this in view, the artist has created a space woven with curtains she has embroidered. Thus does she let her invented figures emmerge according to a composition as emancipated as it is unconditioned, on a background that nothing can reduce to a foundation. A canvas, so to say, without substance; looking at it, you can’t but note its extreme porosity, and therefore, already, its opening, bearing on an elsewhere beyond the circumscribed place of exhibition. This means an increase of multiple orientations that never wait until we are ready to welcome them, locate them or identify them. A surplus, then, of infinite “performativities” proliferating unrelentingly and without restraint, where possible worlds occur that neither the human nor the animal nor God him or herself would see coming or be expecting. A coming of figures that neither the human nor the animal nor God sees.
