Hagia Sophia was also a museum of contemporary art for a fleeting moment. In September-October 2006, Klaus Rinke exhibited in the upper gallery, which was formerly reserved for women, a group of very large-format paintings, the largest measuring 3.7 x 5.6 m. Worked in graphite, they unfolded their organic forms in a decor of Byzantine mosaics dating back to the 6th century.
