Revolutions in Evolution
Who better than a philosopher, author notably of Gloire et misère de l’image après Jésus-Christ [Glory and Misery f the Image after Jesus Christ] (a book to feature in our next issue), and mathematician, to help us to understand the issues addressed by the exhibition Les Origines du Monde, at the Musée d’Orsay? Olivier Rey shows us how geology shattered the Christian conception of our world, how Darwinian evolutionary theory made our modes of representation evolve, how scientific discoveries were a challenge taken up by artists’ imaginations. He had visited the exhibition when it had just been hung in December, accompanied by its curator Laura Bossi. Our only wish now is that we can all rush to it when these pages are published.
