The woman who has been taming the vital breath of painting for 40 years is constantly facing new challenges. In two successive exhibitions, Alchimie d’un vitrail at the Camille Claudel Museum in Nogent-sur-Seine (April 2nd— September 26th, 2022) and Le Chant des étoiles at the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar (October 1st, 2022—March 28th, 2023), Fabienne Verdier experiments with the demands of stained glass and hypnotises herself with the colours of the Issenheim altarpiece. A fresh dialogue with the history of art through which the artist inaugurates a new path, towards the light and the invisible.
“Let the lines dream.” This sentence, taken from Paul Klee, is framed on one of the full pages of Fabienne Verdier’s notebook. Opposite, several Van Eyck virgins and the irresistible sensation of elevation of a “light-matter that rises, that vibrates, that radiates,” as the artist writes. This awakening to the mystery of light was refined by the contemplation of Flemish painters during her exhibition at the Groeninge Museum in Bruges in 2013, organised by Daniel Abadie. Later, in 2018, thanks to the commission for three stained glass windows for the choir of the Church of SaintLaurent in Nogent-sur-Seine and an oculus in the heart of the Hôtel-Dieu-Le-Comte de Troyes (the headquarters of the new Cité du Vitrail, inaugurated this spring), it took off, driven by the trial by fire vested in the stained glass technique.
The artist’s line becomes an incandescent wave, active, medium-like. Like an ancient gnomon, it breaks through, undulates, envelops the void, streaks the stone column, and nestles there for a moment before continuing its race to the rhythm of the sun’s orb. A floating form, it is the projection of the meanderings that the artist has made burst forth from the stained glass windows. The silver yellow mixed with greyness, a velvety shade of gold, is inspired by the know-how of the sixteenth century stained glass windows of Champagne, jewels of the regional heritage. The quest for this precious brilliance gave rise to a gruelling alchemical initiation to release the silver yellow, usually confined to the mass of the glass.
THE SONG OF THE VORTEX
But the painter, faithful to her spontaneous gesture and assisted by the master glassmaker Flavie Serrière Vincent-Petit, has accomplished the unthinkable, transcending the ancestral technique. “Every afternoon, the light dances in the chapel, you can walk around it, its immateriality induces a different vision. It is magical that the painter is interested in the earth and that the earth be
comes light through the alchemy of fire,” she says. “Something of the dream of deformation enters the soul of the worker,” Bachelard wrote. For Fabienne Verdier, this is the dream of abstraction, essential, symbiotic with the universe. An elemental form of painting. “I almost gave up, and then one day, on the last try, there it was, it stood alone in space thanks to the reserve of material in my brushes.” She tamed this “reserve” during her years in China, before adapting it on a monumental scale in her workshop in the Val d’Oise, not far from the land of Van Gogh. Whereas the Dutch painter knew how to fill his skies and wheat fields with vibrant atmospheric scrolls, Fabienne Verdier lays her undulations on her immense canvases, which she flies above, hooked to her gigantic brush which she grafted to a bicycle handlebar to allow for better movement. Her whole body is at work, thanks to a travelling mechanism, a disciple of the energy of the earth and the air. If gravity is operative, it rubs shoulders with the dynamism of movement. During a project at the Juilliard School in New York in 2014, the artist’s line remained suspended and swelled to the sound of fragments of Mozart’s arias. Her great Vortex, expanding vertical flows, now embedded in the frame of two windows at the museum of Nogent (gift of the artist), were born from the melody and her paintbrushes. The Forces Tourbillonnaires stained glass window extends the room containing Camille Claudel’s La Valse. From dance to sculpture, from song to the breath of painting, the energy lines of the two artists are intertwined, aerial. “I feel an affinity with Camille Claudel, her interest in the vital forces of matter. I’m thinking of her Vague too. My Forces Tourbillonnaires also recount her impossible love with Rodin.”
CELESTIAL PAINTING
The painter has created several Vortex, a new matrix of her research. A huge one, seven meters high, will be installed as part of the exhibition she is preparing for the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar. In front of the reproduction of Grünewald’s Risen Christ, which adorns the entrance of her workshop, she shows me the ascending circumvolution of the drapery. In the vast nave designed for the museum by Herzog & de Meuron, the Vortex, like a contemporary altarpiece, will deploy its cosmic strength between earth and sky. All around, 76 halos of polyphonic colours recall the aberration of light that surrounds the face of Grünewald’s Christ. Procession of departing souls in a burning chapel… Fabienne Verdier thought about the pandemic and that of the ergot of rye in the sixteenth century, whose victims gathered in front of the Issenheim altarpiece in the hope of a cure. She also evokes her pain in front of the plastic-wrapped body of her dear friend Alain Rey, who died during the Covid19 outbreak and whom it was impossible for her to mourn. So she began to paint, layers after layers of glaze, mixing magenta, cyan blue and yellow, in a tireless quest for the invisible spectrum of white light. “I tried to invent a new language, a new icon.” Ecstatic, celestial painting. A virtuoso of colour, its circles, entitled Rainbows, are like the star dust that continues to live in the gaseous fluid of the atmosphere, a metaphor for souls leaving our bodies. Never lyrical, infinitely poetic, Fabienne Verdier’s formal precision, like Pollock’s drips and Newman’s vibrations, ceaselessly renews the field and the possibilities of abstraction. “No room for inertia,” whispers another of her notes.
