ORLAN.

In this exhibition (curated by J. Crenn and A. Ténèze), every piece is a manifesto. That of carnal art, an aesthetic, political and feminist approach that de/re/figures the history of the art of representation with critical distance and self-deprecation. It is an historical and original exhibition that brings together a hundred works and documents by ORLAN (France, b. 1947), from the 1960s to the present day. She deploys her art as a theatre of operations obliterating socio-patriarchal labelling by means of sculpture, photography, video, performance, robotics, video games, and augmented reality. She reflects on the plasticity and the politics of the body: the body of the Madonna soliciting a kiss from the artist, thrown headlong into the orders, cut up, sold on the market, an act of “mesuRAGE,” idealised in a killing game, modified by satellite retransmission, augmented by virtuality, bursting out of the frame, emancipated. She throws the body into a crisis in art, canonised by religious idealism and commodity fetishism, but also stages the modern subject in philosophy, disembodied by bourgeois humanism and abstract universalism. She upends dualistic Cartesian rationality through the invention of a future corporeality: self-hybridised, cybernetised, xenogendered, baroqueer, nomadic and mutant, mixed with simultaneous opposites: Mary and Mary Magdalene, pure and impure, erotic and ecstatic, black and white, human and more than human… Against necropolitics, the origin of war, the mortified body, she screams at life. With power and ecstasy. ORLAN the warrior woman.
