The legendary fortress of Château de Bonaguil began as a stronghold in the 13th century, but it wasn’t until the 16th century that the powerful Bérenger de Roquefeuil constructed the huge barbican, towers, draw bridges and bunkers. Later in the 18th century it was improved with more luxurious lodgings but it was confiscated and looted during the French Revolution. Today it is an extraordinary place to visit and there are events throughout the summer season: art exhibits, medieval days, concerts, outdoor theatre festivals, and a fireworks display for the National Heritage Days in September.
