PYRÉNÉES-ATLANTIQUES Basque villages of Ainhoa and Espelette
Just twenty minutes from the coast, you’ll find yourself off the beaten path in the foothills of the Basque Country. This is a refreshing place to walk in the hills and explore the quiet villages. Ainhoa is one of the most picturesque and makes a great base for hillwalking. The town of Espelette is home to the famous dried red peppers called Piment d’espelette, the cornerstone of Basque cuisine. At the end of summer, after the picking, the peppers are hung outside homes and from balconies for drying, decorating the village.
