The Pierrefitte Standing Stone Saint-sulpice-de-faleyrens

200 metres from the Dordogne River, where the port of Saint-emilion once stood, the largest standing stone of South West France (5.2 metres) looms at the edge of the path once used by the pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela. Noted in official acts of the 13th century under the name of “Pétra-fixa”, the stone is thought to have been erected around 2600-2300 BC. It has been the object of many beliefs, reverences and rites throughout the centuries (Golden Calf, healing rheumatisms, etc.). Today, the summer solstice is celebrated here at the end of June.
