In 1096, Pope Ur­ban II con­se­crated the first cathe­dral of Bor­deaux. In 1305, the Arch­bishop of Bor­deaux, Ber­trand de Goth, was elected Pope un­der the name of Cle­ment V, and a pe­riod of con­struc­tion fol­lowed. The de­sign of the Saint-an­dré cathe­dral was based on the Latin Cross, and con­sti­tutes a fine ex­am­ple of south­ern gothic ar­chi­tec­ture. The Royal Door, con­structed in the 13th cen­tury, is dec­o­rated with re­mark­able sculp­tures. Two fa­mous mar­riages took place here: the mar­riage of Eleanor of Aquitaine and the fu­ture king of France Louis VII (1137) as well as the mar­riage of Louis XIII to Anne of Aus­tria (1615).
