Michael Jackson on the Museum Wall Michael Jackson s’expose « On the Wall »
The Grand Palais in Paris is paying tribute to one of the great cultural figures who emerged out of the 20th century, Michael Jackson.
An exhibition entitled Michael Jackson: On the Wall, offers an exploration of the cultural impact of Michael Jackson’s stardom and musical work on the world of contemporary art from the 1980s to the present day. Michael Jackson remains one of the most influential cultural figures to emerge from the 20th century and his legacy lives on into the 21st century. While his contributions to music, music videos, dance, choreography and fashion have been widely recognised, his impact on art remains to be explored, and that is precisely what this exhibition, organised by the National Portrait Gallery in London and produced in Paris by the Réunion des Musées Nationaux – Grand Palais with the cooperation of the Michael Jackson estate, aims to do.
Since Andy Warhol first used his image in 1982, a range of contemporary artists across the generations and the continents have done the same and the show brings together the works of over 40 of these artists emanating from public and private collections around the world all the while including new works made especially for the exhibition. The works presented have been created in myriad mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video and performance. The works are placed in the context of Michael Jackson’s life and work and the show is organised in a chronological fashion tracing the life of the gifted youngster to the global phenomenon.
