OISE : CHÂTEAU DE PIERREFONDS Of Swords and Stones L’épée et la pierre
The castle of Pierrefonds is welcoming an exhibition devoted to the mythical once and future king, Arthur. The Arthurian legend has fascinated young and old alike for centuries be it the 12th century novels of Chrétien de Troyes or Wagner’s opera Parsifal to the present day with the successful television series Merlin part of which was filmed on location at the castle of Pierrefonds.
Today, the castle is hosting an exhibition devoted to Arthur and the legendary round table fittingly entitled King Arthur. The show, presented by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux (France’s National Monument Centre) and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (France’s National Library) brings the legend alive through projections of illuminated manuscripts emanating from the prestigious collection of the National Library, which possesses the world’s leading collection of manuscripts devoted to King Arthur.
The show presents the major Arthurian themes and the key characters in the Arthurian universe in the form of the projections of the illuminated medieval manuscripts. Arthur, Merlin, Lancelot, Morgan le Fay and the Lady of the Lake all emerge during the visit, which is peppered with fantasy-like shadows, fabulous castles and magical mirages. The show also takes a look at how the legend has been re-discovered and re-invented from the 19th century onwards in literature, comic books and cinema.
