OISE : CH­TEAU DE PIERREFONDS Of Swords and Stones L’épée et la pierre

The castle of Pierrefonds is wel­co­ming an ex­hi­bi­tion de­vo­ted to the my­thi­cal once and fu­ture king, Ar­thur. The Ar­thu­rian le­gend has fas­ci­na­ted young and old alike for cen­tu­ries be it the 12th cen­tu­ry no­vels of Ch­ré­tien de Troyes or Wa­gner’s ope­ra Par­si­fal to the present day with the suc­cess­ful te­le­vi­sion se­ries Mer­lin part of which was fil­med on lo­ca­tion at the castle of Pierrefonds.

To­day, the castle is hos­ting an ex­hi­bi­tion de­vo­ted to Ar­thur and the le­gen­da­ry round table fit­tin­gly en­tit­led King Ar­thur. The show, pre­sen­ted by the Centre des Mo­nu­ments Na­tio­naux (France’s Na­tio­nal Mo­nu­ment Centre) and the Bi­blio­thèque Na­tio­nale de France (France’s Na­tio­nal Li­bra­ry) brings the le­gend alive through pro­jec­tions of illu­mi­na­ted ma­nus­cripts ema­na­ting from the pres­ti­gious col­lec­tion of the Na­tio­nal Li­bra­ry, which pos­sesses the world’s lea­ding col­lec­tion of ma­nus­cripts de­vo­ted to King Ar­thur.

The show pre­sents the ma­jor Ar­thu­rian themes and the key cha­rac­ters in the Ar­thu­rian uni­verse in the form of the pro­jec­tions of the illu­mi­na­ted me­die­val ma­nus­cripts. Ar­thur, Mer­lin, Lan­ce­lot, Mor­gan le Fay and the La­dy of the Lake all emerge du­ring the vi­sit, which is pep­pe­red with fan­ta­sy-like sha­dows, fa­bu­lous castles and ma­gi­cal mi­rages. The show al­so takes a look at how the le­gend has been re-dis­co­ve­red and re-in­ven­ted from the 19th cen­tu­ry on­wards in li­te­ra­ture, co­mic books and ci­ne­ma.
