ALSO ON AS PART OF THE NAPOLEON BICENTENARY CELEBRATIONS
Organised into nine chronological sections, the exhibition offers an intimate and historical portrait of Napoleon, covering the time he spent at the military college of Brienne, the military campaigns waged in Italy (1796) and Egypt (1799), the Coup of 18 Brumaire and the creation of the Consulate and the Empire, as well as his more personal affairs, including his wives Josephine and Marielouise, his legitimate son known as the King of Rome, and his brothers and sisters, who he positioned as heads of Europe. The exhibition also portrays the decline of the Empire marked, in particular, by the military defeats in Spain (1808) and Russia (1812), as well as the Hundred Days War and the definitive fall of Napoleon after the Battle of Waterloo.
The arts and life at court, which left an indelible impression on the decorative arts, are also evoked through some truly spectacular reconstructions that include a throne room or and a table laid with the finest productions. Sculptures, paintings by the greatest artists of the time, such as David, Gros and Gérard, furniture, objets d'art, courtly clothing, luxury weapons, decorations, Sèvres porcelain, silverware and personal objects belonging to the Emperor, including a huge car commissioned for Napoleon's marriage to Marie-louise, all testify to the life he led and chart the rise and the fall of his royal saga.
