THE LION KING MAKES A MAJESTIC RETURN

-

We are delighted to announce that The Lion King musical is back under the spotlights at the Mogador Theatre.

After running from 2007 to 2010, attracting 1.5 million spectators and winning three French theatre Molière awards in 2008 (Best Musical, Best Costume Design and Best Lighting Design), The Lion King returns to enthral us and set the stage of the Mogador Theatre on fire.

Since premiering on 13 November 1997, this Disney Theatrical Productions musical directed by Thomas Schumacher has attracted worldwide audiences in excess of 100 million, leaving its mark in the history of live performance with 25 productions – three of which have run for over 15 years, while three others have extended over more than 20 years – produced in nine different languages, played in 21 countries and more than 100 cities on all continents.

This multi-award-winning show, amassing over 70 recognitions worldwide, received 6 Tony Awards in 1998 for the Broadway production alone, including Best Director and Best Costume Design for the talented Julie Taymor, who was capable of moving beyond the codes of cartoon design and reinterpreting the story. To achieve this, she surrounded herself with a creative team made up of talent such as Richard Hudson, a British decorator born in Zimbabwe; Harth Fagan, a Jamaican choreographer; and Lebo M, a South African composer known for his rhythmic arrangements.

More than a musical, The Lion King is a vibrant 360-degree show humming with energy and packed full of innovation, including 25 species of animals, fish, birds and insects, catapulting the audience into the heart of the savannah. A show full of glorious colour and stunning effects, set to the bewitching music of Elton John and Tim Rice.

The story set in the majestic Serengeti plain in Africa recounts the perilous journey of Simba, a young lion, heir to King Mufasa. On his father's death, Simba (played for this new production by Gwendal Marimoutou) must overcome the jealousy and greed of his uncle Scar. To regain his position and fulfil his destiny as King of the Pride Lands, Simba will embark on numerous adventures that will take him far from his homeland and teach him about the universal and enduring issues of friendship, self-confidence and love.

A moving and enriching story to enjoy once and again!

From November 6th, 2021.
