Galerie Jérôme Poggi Powering Up

-

In almost 10 years of existence (in 2019), Galerie Jérôme Poggi in Paris has gained a place on the map, first in France, then in Europe, before becoming known across the Atlantic as well thanks to its assiduous presence at international art fairs, the next of which is Art Basel Miami Beach this December. Here we can report on a range of upcoming events, including exhibitions on Kapwani Kiwanga, Marion Verboom, and Djamel Tatah.

An atypical gallerist with a singular program: Jérôme Poggi is a graduate of the École Centrale and an art historian. His hallmarks are an interest in artists at the margins and reflection on the new forms of exchange between art and society. After a remarkable presence at the FIAC as part of an exhibition suggestively entitled “The Border is a State of Mind,” curated by Sasha Pevak (with works by Kapwani Kiwanga, Eric Baudelaire, Babi Badalov, Nikita Kadan, Sophie Ristelhueber, Société Réaliste), he has shown work by the monk and weaver Sidival Fila – whose first solo exhibition in France he organized in December 2017 – during Artbo, before exhibiting the work of Kapwani Kiwanga during the 2018 edition of Art Basel Miami Beach this December. For this first participation in the fair, the gallery will present a new series by Kiwanga, inspired by the congress on the urban planning of colonies held during the International Colonial Exhibition in 1931, coordinated by Marshal Lyautey, Resident General in Morocco. In his notes, Lyautey mentioned a proposal to provide a “minimum distance of 500 feet” between native and European settler spaces. Based on this historical fact, and in the continuity of his work, Kiwanga has explored how colonial thought shaped not only spaces, but also interpersonal relationships. In addition, the winner of the Révélations Emerige prize, awarded on November 6 to Paul Mignard, will have an exhibition at Galerie Jérôme Poggi (in Autumn 2019), chosen this year (after Michel Rein) to interact with the winner. Also to discover: after Djamel Tatah, who recently joined the gallery and will be showing at 1-54 Marrakech (February 2019), visitors can see pieces by Marion Verboom, created during an artist’s residency, as part of LVMH Métiers d’Art, at the Manufacture Thélios, where she worked with acetate (a component in the production of eyewear).

Marion Verboom, “Ester,” (curator: Léa Chauvel-Lévy) in partnership with LVMH Métiers d’Art, Galerie Jérôme Poggi, December 1, 2018 – January 12, 2019. Kipwani Kiwanga, Art Basel Miami Beach, December 6-9, 2018.
