The longest days have come round again, so may I suggest a new nomadic attitude for the contemporary era… It’s time to set off au naturel with the extended family, but with a lot less baggage, for the Andean Mountains, the Isla Holbox in Mexico, Pantelleria in Italy or Gotland in Sweden… That’s precisely where we are on the cover, in Valleviken, a hamlet on the Baltic Sea, not far from the island of Fårö, where the great film-maker Ingmar Bergman once took refuge and where the iconic character Pippi Longstocking used to roam about and play.
This magnificent family portrait taken by Elisabeth Toll sheds light on a potential summer attitude: nudity. Practised by the whole family for a privileged moment, this nakedness nevertheless remains modest. It is not a way of making a statement. These are Swedish people to whom nudity comes naturally. Since the child is still very young, modesty has yet to become part of his social behaviour. Because they are going to bathe in this completely isolated place…
I was moved by this photo because it portrays the very essence of family: feeling at ease.
