His use of the encyclopedic project – with invisibility as its subject – goes back to the sources of the Enlightenment, which sought to speak the world in entries. These entries would make it possible to master and possess the world, and in mastering it ensure a form of visibility. What was in the encyclopedia was important. Could what was not in it even be considered part of the world? Thus the invisible was what could not find its place in the encyclopedia. What is unseen is often what is not. And yet, what cannot be seen is. Therein lies the crux Strachan’s work: to take the apparent contradiction and prove that it is not one, that what is not seen does indeed exist, and that it is therefore possible, even necessary, to shed full light on it, and, in so doing, to open and complete the representation of the world. Light is also a crucial aspect of his work – that which allows us to see. Accepting the world in its diversity, Strachan does not prefer light to darkness – that which prevents us from seeing; he plays them off each other, engendering new creation from the tension between the two, a poetics that is also an epistemology and a form of morals.
Strachan does not oppose science and knowledge: what was called “human sciences,” to which he has recourse for The Encyclopedia of Invisibility and for his works that bring back History, is a set of disciplines that he extends. Science, in its aspiration to tell the world, is not foreign to him. The will to explore, to know and to master, in a world that on the one hand is considered known and on the other is known to be unmasterable, finds in his work a late and new manifestation, similar to a human utopia that would need
relatifs.

The encyclopedia itself cannot be complete: it does not cease to be taken up, reactivated, it does not stop. The monumentality of his Encyclopedia is important to him, the including of that which was excluded. He demonstrates that encyclopedias are not just totalizing enterprises but also relative projects. An encyclopedia is always an encyclopedia of this or that subject. His is an encyclopedia of that which is least encyclopedic, thus proving that this project to account for the world is not, in itself, to be abandoned: after all, it is a human utopia. But it must be opened up, taken back, multiplied, never frozen.
Strachan knows how to create intensities: powerful sculptures in marble, bronze and other materials, which own their contradictions and their presence. We recognize an image, a work that may have given birth to this one, but it is displaced, overtaken, linked with other stories, which are now united in a reality. The act, the return of History in lived scenes, does not contradict the sculpture. Research is not opposed to fixation. The journey is not the opposite of staying put. The past does not contradict the world’s youth. On the contrary, it is in the permanent association of images, thoughts, histories and futures that the work can manifest itself. Strachan’s major contribution is to have carried further than others before him the combination between past and present, knowledge and form, between the very senses; and to have done it with the untiring drive to rewrite more complete historical narratives that can be his, ours, and that must, in his art and perhaps beyond, agree to be shared.
