THE "LEKHA SINGH" EXHIBITION OF WOMEN WHO "CARRY THE WORLD",
There are millions of them, carrying millions of kilos, over millions of kilometers. On their heads, on their backs, on their shoulders, at arm's length or close to them, they have been carrying children for centuries, transporting wood, water, food, bricks or mountains of cotton. Through this exhibition, which reveals the spectacular burdens they carry, American photographer Lekha Singh pays tribute to the women of the world. Each one, in her own way, carries a part of the world.
Lekha Singh is an American visual artist. She has had the opportunity to travel the world and draw artistic inspiration from her travels. Since 2004, she has exhibited her photographic work in numerous American museums in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Washington D.C. and San Francisco. Her work is featured in permanent collections such as Lacma (Los Angeles County Museum of Arts), ICP (International Center of Photography, New York) and the Ruben Museum of Art (New York). She has also published her photographs in various books, such as The Other Side of War, Women's Stories of Survival & Hope, and is known for her documentaries: in 2012, she directed Beyond Right and Wrong: Stories of Justice and Forgiveness, a film that explores the role of forgiveness in the quest for justice in Rwanda, Israel and Palestine, and Northern Ireland.
From June 29, 2022 to January 2, 2023, the Musée de l'homme will present, in the Foyer Germaine Tillion, some fifty portraits
MUSÉE DE L'HOMME
THE "LEKHA SINGH" EXHIBITION of women who "carry the world", whom Lekha Singh photographed during her travels. These photographs, which take us to India, Tanzania, Morocco, the United States, Mongolia, Bhutan, Japan, Kenya, Rwanda or Namibia, celebrate women by representing them in all their strength and courage.
Sportswomen, mothers of families, foster mothers, human mules, doyennes with skin cracked by the daily heat or teenagers putting their nascent strength to the test...
According to the WHO and UNICEF, more than two billion people do not have direct access to drinking water. The task of supplying them falls heavily on women and girls. And in the last decade, droughts and desertification have doubled or even tripled the distances to be covered. On the paths of the fields, on the roads of the markets, on the paths of the villages or in our cities, they are here united by the physical and mental power that allows them to carry the weight of the world... without anyone really being aware of it. Through these striking portraits, the Musée de l'homme wishes to pay a vibrant tribute to these strong women.
Exhibition Lekha Singh "Women carry the world", from June 29, 2022 to January 2, 2023, at the Foyer Germaine Tillion of the Musée de l'homme. 17 place du Trocadéro, Paris 16e.

Lekha Singh's photos reveal the extent to which, in India, Tanzania, Kenya, the United States... everywhere on the planet, the physical strength of women is put to the test. Lekha Singh
