Peacock Bass are not ac­tual­ly Bass, but mem­bers of the Ci­chla fa­mi­ly (there are 15 re­co­gni­sed spe­cies of Ci­chlas), with the lar­gest of them being our main tar­get spe­cies - the Ci­chla te­men­sis, Giant ‘Spe­ck­led or Three-Bar­red Peacock Bass’. It is al­so cal­led Tu­cu­na­ré Açu in Bra­zi­lian, but this name ori­gi­nates from the Tu­pi In­dians and which means tree (Tu­cun), friend (aré) and Giant (Açu) or ‘giant friend of the trees’.
