According to novelist Somerset Maughan, “to acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life.” This is precisely what the XL-MUSE architects in collaboration with Design Director Li Xiang and her team have succeeded in doing with the Hangzhou Zhongshuge bookstore, only a two-hour drive from Shanghai. Located in the Star Avenue department store close to the Qiantang River, this enclave that one might think as taken out of Alice in Wonderland has immediately been dubbed “most beautiful bookstore in the world” by its large media following. With its oval reading room, cascading shelves and mirrored ceiling, this bookstore offers an unforeseen experience for books and architecture enthusiasts alike. And even the kids can have fun in the library’s playground, which includes a merry-go-round, among other attractions. If that does not inspire the happy reading experience, nothing will!
