Winemaker’s Voice

-

Emanuela Bolla

Co-owner and winemaker of Fratelli Serio &

Battista Borgogno (Piemonte)

“Each vintage is different then at the end of a harvest, you must remember to start a new vintage as if it were the first. You must never

take anything for granted.”

“Wine is the sublimation of the essence of creation.”

Wine is the enthusiastic soul of the ones who produce it, the ones who know how to gather and transmit the authenticity of the land from which they come.

Wine is my life, I know it might seem trivial, but it’s true. The wine contains and represents everything I care about most: it is my family, it is my home, it is the story of my family and our territory.where I was born. My grandfather always used to tell me ”to become a good winemaker you must remember to always be humble, respectful but in particular curious in the vineyard.”

So every harvest, every moment to get to it is unique emotion for me.Without a doubt, 2016 was an important year: I realized that I could manage the vineyard and in particular the harvest with autonomy, to I saw the satisfied eyes of my family. I felt the harvest even more mine.Without, however, forgetting that one must never stop learning ...

Fabio Sireci

Owner & winemaker of Feudo Montoni (Sicily)

It is to “play” with the time… It’s extremely exciting to walk in the past, create in the present and dream for the future… every year, every harvest, every tasting, your mind and your soul run around investigating, understanding, thinking, dreaming on the terrace of time of your life… from the written notes of a visit to Feudo Montoni of 1550 by Andrea Bacci, to tasting notes written by my grandfather at the end of the nineteenth century, or from my father’s advice of the twentieth century, to the harvests made and which, as soon as they have already been concluded, are a laboratory of ideas on what to do in the next harvests of the future.

Everything starts from the earth. The earth is woman and mother and everything starts from her. Everything is power and it is in her. If you love her, you take care of her, you are always beside her, you realize that she delicately succeeds in transferring to the man what he does not see, he does not hear. Wine is the tip of a turntable that transfers sounds and emotions from a rigid vinyl record to the deep soul of the listener. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart of a record intertwine with aromas of cherries in alcohol, notes of tobacco, essences of bergamot, a glass, musical notes and notes of licorice or mint intertwine in a marvelous orchestra in which the winemaker is the only one the orchestra conductor… only tries to put one after the othe…the notes on a pentagram… but everything was already created, everything was already in her…

“Wine is our family history and is also a way of life for all the people who are

around us daily, it’s our life.”

“Wine is a colorful hydro-alcoholic solution that is not obligatory in our life but can create

exceptional moments in our existence. ”

Damien Barton Sartorius

Brand ambassador & co-owner ofVignobles Barton

Wine for me is memories, it is current life and it is a futur that keeps my mind wondering along. Memories with family. When my mother made me taste a Lafitte Rothschild on a 31st of December at the age of 10 (maybe younger?!). My Grand Father who would come every Sunday Lunch with a bottle of wine that would be blind tasted; most often guessed with higher success when I would think about his last trip. It could be a modest Egyptian wine up to the impressive Screaming Eagle or family wines… it could be anything! It’s also childhood memories, starting by picking three bunches of grapes before deciding that the tractor was a lot more fun.The workers at the Chateau where closer to me of an enlarged family than of employees.Three quarters of them saw me born and grow up.It’s a chance that I cherish immensely.

I am still young but wine is all my life because its also the case for my sister Mélanie, my mother Lilian and for my Grand Father Anthony.Wine is also current life where I am lucky to walk in the huge steps shaped by the previous generations.A big pressure of course, but what a chance I have to have as a daily trafic the tractors going to the vineyard, morning sunrises on a white frost in winter, the indescribable excitement the eve before harvest…

Finally, its constant questions regarding the futur of family, consumption, technical and environmental aspects which could be resumed in one question: « and what is next? ».

Guillaume Pouthier

Winemaker of Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion These moments can become unique if they are shared with others… The wine crosses -- generations, accommodates beliefs, surpasses the strongest symbols. It is a sign of joy, well-being and gathering.A ½ bottle, even more so a bottle and even a magnum has within it the complex alchemy between man and his place. It is very difficult to tame and reproduce this alchemy, as it can surprise us! But nothing is more beautiful than when the consumer discovers and feels inside him, the often complex vision of the winemaker. In the end, the winemaker does not just try to set to music a score that he does not know but in which he discovers the notes over the growing season. What a challenge! The culmination is just a biological transformation of a grape juice into a nectar that will each have to attain its true value. We are talking about VIN !!

For me, to date one of the greatest wine emotions was a bottle of cathelin 1991.This bottle was perfection… How the winemaker was able to gather in the same bottle all this aromatic complexity, texture and structure, this finesse, this elegance and balance… Bravo Mr Chave !!!
