THE WORLD’S BIGGEST STATUE
The Statue of Unity, inaugurated on the 31st of October, is the world’s tallest statue, at 182 metres. Twice the height of the Statue of Liberty, it was erected in the Narmada district of the Gujarat state, in India. It depicts Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a leader of India’s independence movement. After India’s independence in 1947, Patel served as the country’s first Deputy Prime Minister, successfully orchestrating the annexation of self-governing “princely states” – states that were never fully under British control – to newly independent India. His commitment to national integration earned him the nickname of “Iron Man of India.” The statue cost £314m.
