Harry Potter Law

Vocable (All English) - - Sur Le Vif -

This December, the National University of Juridical Sciences of Kolkata, an Indian law school, will launch its first course on the Harry Potter universe. The students will study the enslavement of house elves, the “unforgivable curses,” and will be asked to apply both Indian and wizardry legal principles to some topics. The course was created by Shouvik Kumar Guha, an assistant professor, to encourage students to think critically about social problems in India, which include discrimination and slavery. “In India right now the political situation is divisive,” he says, “I have my own political leanings, but it would be inappropriate to apply them in class. So I am trying to use something on which our students will not have any previous value judgments.”
