Back to the Commonwealth

The Maldives has applied to rejoin the Commonwealth, two years after withdrawing from the organisation under autocratic president Abdulla Yameen. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Maldives’ new president, wrote to the Commonwealth secretary-general in December to request his country to be readmitted to the Commonwealth. The Maldives is a former British colony.
