The Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac is presenting an exhibition, which offers a journey into the importance of ghosts and the afterlife in Asian art and culture with a focus on China, Thailand and Japan. Entitled Ghosts and Hells: The Underworld in Asian Art, the show takes a look at ghost stories from these regions journeying into the world of spirits, ghosts and fantastic creatures like the vengeful catwomen, hopping vampires and the yokais, the supernatural creatures of Japanese folklore. The show explores their representation in objects, art work, the performing arts, cinema and comic books from the 16th century to the present and brings together cinema, religious art, theatre, contemporary creation, mangas and video games. The exhibition illustrates the idea that the ghost never dies and that its sudden appearances are unpredictable. Contemporary creation is showcased with notably film extracts, an installation re-producing the underworlds of Thai temples and a host of surprising special effects. - P.V.
