Discover new moods

- by Maya C. Sternel

With the new Max for Live Device, Microtuner, which is now integrated in Live Suite, you can play microtonal scales on Push. Included is a library of over 5000 scales. You can change the scales or develop a whole new tuning system - two microtonal scales flowing into each other in real time to create unique tunings. You‘ll learn how this works in this workshop. 1

Install Microtuner

Download and install the Live Pack Microtuner. You will then find it in the Live Browser in the MIDI Effects. Put a MIDI controller into a new MIDI track and load the Microtuner into the track. The device should always be at the end of a MIDI effect chain! If Push and no MPE controller is connected, deactivate MPE. 1

2

Adjust pitch

The pitch bend range of the Microtuner and the loaded MIDI controller should always match; therefore, match the pitchbend value on the Microtuner with the value of the MIDI controller. Mictrotuner has two areas for loading scales, A and B. In the A section, you will find some scales to choose from in the Collection folder under File. 1

3

Load scale

When downloading the pack, a folder labeled scl was downloaded at the same time, which contains over 5000 different scales. You can drag single scales, or all scales at once from the folder to the Microtuner. After they are loaded, select a scale under File. Select Chromatic under Scale in Push. 1

4

Change key note

Otherwise, you may not be able to access all notes of a scale via the Push Pads. In the circle labeled Scale, you can see the division of the scale and which level you are currently playing. With BASE FREQ, you define the basic frequency of the scale. And with TRANSPOSE, you can shift it in semitone steps. 1

5

Develop your own scale

To generate your own scales, select SOURCE Generator A. Use PITCHES to specify the number of notes in the scale and NUMERATOR and DENOMINATOR to specify the distribution or distances between them. If the first value is larger, the scale exceeds the range of an octave. Normally, the tones are distributed evenly over the defined range. 1

6

Fine tuning

If you choose a value for RANDOM, the distribution is random. To activate the scale, move GENERATE from off to on. Select Follow in Live to select individual tones via Position and edit them with Cent. Revert restores the original state. If you have also defined a scale for Scale B, select Blend On to blend the scales.
