Neuzeit Instruments Quasar

Finally space in the rack! Or? At least the slogan for the „first binaural mixer in Eurorack format“arouses this expectation. But what does binaural mean anyway? While the „bi“might make you think of „two“and thus stereo, the term stands for recordings in which all sounds can be precisely localized. Ideally when listening through headphones. So from now on exclusive listening in 3D directly at the Eurorack? Indeed, it would be a possibility, because Quasar offers its own separate headphone output for this purpose. But the module can do even more...

The two main encoders named Quasar 1 and 2 not only look fancy, but also serve a purpose as level meters. Each of them is responsible for one of the mono inputs. However, they are not divided into left and right, but can position the audio signal individually and freely in the room. Via volume control they can be mixed independently and the center signal also has a control. To become familiar with the module, one Quasar is sufficient for the time being.

The parameters height, angle, distance, as well as reverb with damping and size are available for placement. The first three can each be set in motion via a Quasar‘s own LFO, the reverb via the two CV inputs. The latter can also influence other parameters like volumes or the LFO rates. In addition, the mono inputs each have a filter that provides a tidy sound as a high or low pass.

Verdict

Does all this bring an advantage in the rack? It depends. If you listen with headphones and place the sources cleverly, the three-dimensionality is clearly perceptible. If you use the stereo out and listen via the monitors, stereo width and mix depth benefit. Thanks to LFOs, tremolo effects, varying reverb and other movements are very easy. However, it should be noted that a Quasar is not intended for complete mixes, but for single signals, of which a maximum of two can be positioned. Whether this purpose meets one‘s own needs, everyone must decide for himself. In any case, the module does its job well.
