Finally: The modular no-brainer as a plug-in!
Anyone who has ever dealt with modulars on the computer will have stumbled across the free VCV Rack, among other things. The open-source software shines with a huge community, which reproduces pretty much every module available „in real life“. So everything for free? Yes, but unfortunately only as a standalone app instead of a plug-in. Until now, because a few resourceful developers have just programmed CardinalSynth, a version that offers almost everything VCV can do as a plug-in for Windows, macOS and Linux.
Synths and effects
The plug-in comes in two versions: CardinalSynth and CardinalFX, so it can be used as a sound generator as well as a pure effects machine. Depending on the plug-in format, there are even multiple audio outputs, as well as ten CV ports included (except for AU and VST2).
Easy handling
The interface is quickly internalized: right-clicking into the rack opens the selection of all available modules that can be installed. Via drag & drop loaded modules can be placed freely and if you click on a CV port to connect a cable, possible destinations are highlighted visually. To connect multiple cables to one port, simply right-click and drag the desired color to the target port.
Modules from over 60 manufacturers
VCV Cardinal includes a module selection from over 60 manufacturers, including Befaco, Expert Sleepers and Mutable Instruments. The desired modules can be found quickly thanks to the listing by manufacturer, type or search term.
Connection to the DAW
Modular is nice, but it becomes even nicer when parameters can be automated via the DAW. This is what the Host Params module is for. The 24 ports can be controlled from the DAW and operate any parameter in the rack. Host MIDI is responsible for aftertouch, mod-wheel and other standards.
