M-Caster Live
With a size of about half a DIN A4 page, this streaming mixer from Mackie is not ultra-portable, but the design featuring an integrated handle is already optimized for mobile use. Somewhat unusual for Mackie is that the M-Caster is completely made of plastic. That makes it pleasantly light at half a kilogram, but we actually expected a Mackie-typical unit that’s built-like-a-tank with a lot of metal for use on the road. The illumination of the underside is nice to look at in any case.
M-Caster was developed for fast and uncomplicated use and for users without much audio engineering experience. There are not many options for fine tuning; most of it is set, optimized and levelled automatically. It is, therefore, difficult to mess up mixes and recordings with M-Caster. On the other hand, due to the all-inclusive default settings, you also have to accept certain disadvantages in some applications, such as a somewhat increased noise level due to the generous headroom of the preamp.
Smartphone, headset, microphone (including 48V phantom power) - almost any source imaginable can be connected directly and easily. Selectable ContourFX presets let you tailor the sound to your voice, from broadcast speaker to stardust diva. StreamFX provide for quirkier voice effects; here, it goes from demonic to Darth Vader to Mickey Mouse and The Chipmunks. These presets do not offer any deeper settings or explanations. Here, it‘s more a case of switching through and trying out each one until you find the right preset. The controls are operated directly via the knobs and buttons on the top. Appropriate symbols explain the function; the menu control was omitted. M-Caster can also be used as an audio interface for Mac or PC via USB. Monitoring is done through headphones or studio monitors; M-Caster has the corresponding connections on the left side.
Verdict
Mackie M-Caster Live is a foolproof streaming mixer that directly processes and optimizes all common sources. Deeper settings or adjustments are not included in the concept; all changes are made using the knobs on the top panel, and various pre-made presets control how the input signals are perfected and effected for the stream. The learning curve is, therefore, very flat, because M-Caster is intended for quick and uncomplicated use without much thought. On the other hand, those who prefer to manipulate the signal path in detail themselves are less well served by this mobile mixer.
