Patchwork # 5: Create irresistible basslines

-

As an emulation of EMS‘s vintage classics VCS4 and VCS3, Xils 4 isn‘t necessarily the first choice for hyper growls and nasty Techno rumbles, but it‘s still a treasure trove when it comes to basslines. Especially with the internal sequencer in the main role. Here we show you how to get the best basslines.

Activate sequencer

We start on the basis of the „Xils 4 Init“preset, in which the oscillators are already connected to the filter and audio output, but we still have to activate the sequencer. To do this, connect KEYB ON and KEYB GATE to SQ ON and SQ OFF at the bottom of the keyboard matrix. This is how you make sure the sequencer is running while a key is pressed.

Pull the cables

In the SEQUENCER matrix we connect SEQ L1 A with FILTER, DECAY and OSC FREQ 1, as well as in the small matrix L.1 with TRAP 1 and ENV 1. In this way, the note values of the sequencer are sent to the oscillator on the one hand, but at the same time Filters and the envelope are also modulated. This often makes the difference later in the groove.

Tip: Do not turn up the connection between SEQ L1 A and OSC FREQ 1 completely, but only a little. This makes them much more exciting for sequencers, especially when the cutoff is turned way down. So the basslines usually push a lot more.

A pattern is needed

Now all we need is a pattern: We are lazy and simply select the random function from the Init - dropdown. After a few tries you should be able to find the first really good sequences. Of course, you can also program these manually.

Tip: Automate filter cutoff or connect SAMPLE AND HOLD to cutoff to make the bassline even more organic if desired.
