Stutter-FX available w/o Live

- by Maya C. Sternel

Whether used for stutter effects or sound progressions, LFO modulations are standard nowadays. Ableton Live‘s LFO audio effect offers a wide range of possibilities, especially because the parameters to be modulated can be freely assigned. However, this can only be done in Live directly and not in Push. But there‘s a solution for that too! Find out how LFO mapping works in Push standalone mode in this workshop! 1 Load LFO for Push

Download the free Device LFO for Push by Elisabeth Homeland [1], an extended version of the Ableton LFO. You will find two versions in the download folder: The Device LFO for Push Single modulates a single, freely assignable parameter, while the other version, LFO For Push 8, can modulate up to eight parameters. 1

2 Install in Live

Save the two LFO for Push devices in the Max Audio Effects folder of your Ableton Live User Library. Next, the two LFO for Push devices must also be saved in Push‘s User Library. Connect Push to your computer and select Control Live Mode in the Push settings menu. 1

3 Prepare Standalone

Select Push under Places in the Ableton Live browser. Move the two LFO for Push devices from the download folder to a location in Push‘s User Library where you can find them again. Ideally, create a new folder by right-clicking on the User Library folder and give it a suitable name. Then, set Push to Standalone Mode. 1

4 Put in track

Load a set into Push or create a new track with a MIDI instrument. Load the LFO for Push 8 device into the track by selecting it via Add (+)-> Device-> User Library -> Your previously created folder. To map parameters to the LFO, select the LFO for Push 8 device in the row above the display. 1

5 Parameter mapping

Next, select Destination 1 below the display. Turn the encoder counterclockwise via Map. Now navigate to the parameter that you want to modulate and briefly move the corresponding encoder. Go back to the LFO for Push device. There, you will see that the mapped parameter is now listed instead of Destination 1. 1

6 Adjust the LFO

The range of the modulation can be determined using Min and Max. You can set other LFO parameters such as Shape, Rate and Depth under the Main and Main2 menu items. Map more parameters by selecting the destination and then continuing as described above. To delete a mapping, simply move the encoder over Unmap.
