Apache 207 and Udo Lindenberg - Komet: Bass w/ Diva
1 21 Weeks at Number 1
Udo Lindenberg in the Beat? Of course he is. Together with Apache 207, the veteran rocker delivered the most successful song of 2023 with „Komet“, which spent a record-breaking 21 weeks at the top of the charts. Produced by Chris James, Jumpa, Sira and Takt32, the song is a perfect blend of Rock and Hip Hop with a chorus that you won‘t soon forget. 1
2 Synth bass in Verse 2
If you listen to „Komet“more closely, there are only a few other elements besides the voices of Udo and Apache. Drums and guitars in the chorus, keys and guitar in the first verse. But in the second Verse, where the song picks up a bit of speed, a crisp synth bass can be heard - somewhere between Disco and Kraftwerk, on the offbeats. 1
3 Moog bass
The bass sounds a lot like a Moog. Let‘s use what I think is the best emulation of the Minimoog on the market: u-He Diva. The triple VCO is preset and the three oscillators are set to 8‘, 16‘ and 4‘ respectively. In addition, detune Oscillator 3 very slightly to 12.06. With Volume next to it, set OSC 3 to 60. 1
4 Envelopes
Let‘s move on to the envelopes. Provided you‘ve programmed short sixteenths for the MIDI notes, the envelopes require no sustain, the shortest Attack times and Decay values of 27 (ADS ENV 1) and 34.50 (ADS ENV
2). With such a jagged sound, even the smallest differences in decay change the character of the sound dramatically. 1
5 Filter and mono
Set the Cutoff in the Filter to 100 and set LAG on the left to ENV 2 as the modulation source. Turn the control below to 48 and KYB for key tracking to 80. As this is a bass synth that is similar to a Minimoog, it should also be monophonic. You can set this in Diva at the bottom center. 1
6 Get to the chorus
Let‘s stay „in-house“for a change and dispense with additional effects because the ones in Diva sound so good on their own that they are more than enough for this sound. With the chorus effect and a relatively small amount of effects, we give the sound the necessary width so that it works better in the arrangement of the second verse.
