That J Dilla vibe for your beats

- by Marco Scherer

When it comes to beatmaking, there’s almost no way around the vibe of legacy drum samplers – like Akai’s MPC 2000XL. Even today this classic machine is still used by countless artists and that is for a reason: its distinct sound and groove. With our free software you get both right at your finger tipps!

Kickstart: Sample, Trim, Assign

Press SHIFT + 4 to enter recording mode, modify Threshold if needed and hit F6 for RECORD. After recording, hit F5 to keep the sample and SHIFT + 5 to enter Sample Edit mode. Hit F5 to choose the NORMALIZE option via Data Wheel and again F5 to use it. Enter PROGRAM EDIT with SHIFT + 6, choose DRUM 1 with F1, use the cursor keys to navigate to Snd: and the Data Wheel to assign a sample. Repeat these steps for more samples.

Switch sections with shortcuts

Switch between sections of the MPC OS with SHIFT + number keys and use F-keys to choose the options F1-F6.

Use your keyboard!

The vMPC is setup exactly like the original machine, including all of its limitations – which help forming your sound. To prevent using the mouse, be sure to use the keyboard setup and all connected keys.

The Data Wheel

To change values, the Data Wheel is your friend – be sure to use its shortcut keys. Hold shift to jump in steps of 10.

Hit the pads!

Use your keyboard to play the pads: the lower row with pads 1 to 4 is triggered by Y, X, C and V, the one above with A, S, D and F. Pads 9 to 13 are triggere by B, N, M and , (comma) and the upper row by G, H, J and K.
