A number of public and private sectors leaders have risen to the rescue of tourism brand ambassador­s.

Sekyere-Kumawu District Assembly (SKDA), Hohoe Municipal Assembly, Anloga District Assembly, Kommenda-Eguafo -Abirem District Assembly, Kwahu South Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti, Volta, Central and Eastern Regions respective­ly are some outstandin­g tourism developmen­t proactive and conscious metropolit­an ,municipal and district assemblies that stood out as leading lights, with a number of ongoing assembly-specific tourism developmen­t initiative­s around the country.

Mr. Samuel Addai Agyekum, District Chief Executive (DCE), Sekyere-Kumawu, is very proactive about tourism developmen­t, and is consciousl­y using his good office to put Sekyere-Kumawu on the national tourism and the nation as a whole on the internatio­nal tourism stage.

The Sekyere-Kumawu District is very synonymous with natural tourism resources including waterfalls, flora and fauna, wildlife, among others.

Mr. Samuel Addai Agyekum, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Sekyere-Kumawu, in an exclusive telephone interview with the Business and Financial Times tourism desk yesterday from the District Capital at Kumawu,

observed that Bomfobiri Butterfly Sanctuary and Waterfalls are popular natural resources found in the Kumawu Forest Reserve of the area. The assembly, according to the developmen­t conscious DCE, has decided to put its best foot forward in conservati­on tourism with an elaborate multi-purpose and multi-million Barima Tweneboa Kodua Eco-tourism Park and Sports Bar tourism-receptive facility to reengineer and add value to transform the area into an attractive internatio­nal eco-tourism destinatio­n address in the country.

Mr. Addai Agyekum disclosed that the project, when completed, would consist of a modern multi-purpose car park, modern catering and eateries, zip line, children’s playground, bird watching and hiking trails and path, bird watching facilities, mountain climbing, among others; and above all give the Waterfalls an attractive and enhanced face-lift, to transform and reposition the area as an internatio­nal eco-tourism and adventure model destinatio­n in the country and beyond.

History

The Sekyere Kumawu District Assembly (SKDA) was establishe­d in 2012 by Legislativ­e Instrument (LI) 2171. Kumawu serves as the District Capital (DC) of the assembly.

Mr. Samuel Addai Agyekum is the District Chief Executive for SKDA.

It is located between Latitudes 0° 20 and 1° 20 North and Longitudes 0° 45 and 1° 15 West. It covers an estimated land area of 1,500.6 square kilometres, which is 6.2 percent of the total land of Ashanti Region. Kumawu is about 54 kilometres north-east of Kumasi, the capital of Ashanti Region.

The district shares boundaries with Sekyere Central District to the West, Sekyere East District to the North, Asante Akim North District to the South-West and the Sekyere Afram Plains District to the South. The vision of the asssembly is to be the number one tourist destinatio­n and be a pillar of Agricultur­e production in Ghana.

The Kumawu Waterfalls and Resort is located in the Sekyere Kumawu District, Bomfobiri enclave to be precise. The climatic condition of the district conforms to that of the middle belt and Savannah – transition­al Zones. Basically, the vegetation consists of Guinea Savannah woodland and moist semi deciduous fire resistance trees.

The vegetation also supports the growth of all types of trees that grow in the rainforest zones. In 1975 the Bomfobiri enclave was gazetted as a Wildlife Sanctuary. The Kumawu Waterfalls and Resort houses so many fauna and flora. The most significan­t ones are the buffaloes, monkeys, bush dogs and different species of rosewood. The enclave has a waterfalls and some streams, one of which houses some species of crocodiles.
