Moment of hope for fleeing Syrians as they reach Kos
Syrian refugees celebrate on Saturday moments after arriving on a dinghy from Turkey at the Greek island of Kos in the Aegean Sea. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) estimates that some 124,000 migrants and refugees reached Greece this year, which is more than 750 percent up on 2014. ‘The Greek authorities need to urgently designate a single body to coordinate response and set up an adequate humanitarian assistance mechanism. As Greece faces financial challenges the country needs help. European countries should support Greece on these efforts,’ said the director of the UNHCR’s Europe bureau, Vincent Cochetel.
