Ankara to begin drilling for gas around Cyprus, FM says
Turkey plans to start drilling for hydrocarbons around Cyprus, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said during a briefing of a Turkish parliamentary committee yesterday, according to the Independent Balkan News Agency (IBNA).
Cavusoglu said that Turkey’s Fatih (or Conqueror) drillship has already started operations in the Alanya-1 plot off its Mediterranean coast, also adding that a recently purchased second drillship “will be sent around Cyprus to begin work.”
“Together with the new platform that will reach the area, we will also start drilling around Cyprus,” he said.
Referring to Nicosia’s drilling operations, Cavusoglu said that Turkey is monitoring developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, and insisted that Ankara it is not against drilling around Cyprus. “But we must also ensure the rights of Turkish Cypriots. This is what we expect from both the EU and the international community,” he added.
