Officer fires gun after assault near university

-

A police officer was injured yesterday when about 50 hooded individuals attacked policemen outside the Athens University of Economics and Business in central Athens. The unidentified assailants emerged from the university’s side gate and hurled stones and other projectiles at a police van bringing officers to the site to crack down on illegal vendors operating in the area. According to sources, the officer who has hurt was the driver of the van. His colleagues managed to get out of the vehicle before it was surrounded by anarchists, who used clubs to attack the driver through the open window. The driver pulled out his service gun and fired out of the window as a warning, prompting the anarchists to retreat. The same officer was injured in a firebomb attack on Omonia police station last October. Police detained 11 people for questioning over yesterday’s incidents.
