Gang broke jaw of youth, 17

An Athens prosecutor was questionin­g four minors over the weekend in connection with the violent beating of a 17-year-old boy in the neighborho­od of Galatsi, while police were seeking another 16 youngsters believed to have been involved in the attack on August 29. According to investigat­ors, a large group of youngsters had been bullying another teenager when the 17-year-old stopped in to defend him. The alleged bullies then threw him to the ground before beating and kicking him for at least 10 minutes, according to the victim’s account of events. The 17-year-old was hospitaliz­ed with a broken jaw and heavy bruising all over his body. After his mother filed a legal suit, the police traced four suspects – a 15-year-old, two 17-year-olds and an 18-yearold – while another 16 youths alleged to have been involved in the incident were also being sought. According to local residents, a gang of youngsters have been bullying their peers in the neighborho­od for several months.

ATMs targeted. Police in Patra, western Greece, were over the weekenda seeking the two assailants behind arson attacks on three ATMs in a mall in the city’s Perivola area. According to investigat­ors, the assailants used homemade explosive devices to detonate the three bank machines before fleeing with an undetermin­ed sum. The incident, which occurred at around 4.30 a.m. on Saturday, did not result in any injuries though the ATMs were destroyed. Investigat­ors are using testimony from a person who happened to have been in the mall at the time of the blasts and are examining footage from security cameras inside the mall for leads to the perpetrato­rs.

August accidents. The Traffic Police recorded 424 violations in Greece in August alone, the majority of which were in Attica, new data has shown. Specifical­ly, 381 road accidents were recorded in Athens, 17 of them fatal and 14 resulting in serious injuries. The reason behind most of the accidents was careless driving and failure to comply with road signs.
