Two bishops summoned

-

Two metropolitan bishops, Seraphim of Kythera and Kosmas of Aetolia Kosmas, have been summoned to an August session of the Church of Greece’s Holy Synod to explain themselves over their “disobedience and disrespect of the unanimous decision of the collective body of the Church of Greece” regarding the coronavirus health measures during the Easter period. On Tuesday, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece recommended vaccination as the exclusive and scientifically tested solution to stop the spread of the coronavirus. According to reports, Archbishop Ieronymos does not want the Church to be accused of disrupting the vaccination program.

Anti-vaxxers.

Reiterating SYRIZA’s firm support for the vaccination effort, its party spokesperson lashed out against ruling New Democracy yesterday, accusing it of “turning a blind eye” to the fact, he said, that anti-vaxxers form a part of its base. Nassos Iliopoulos said Wednesday’s anti-vaccination demonstrations in major Greek cities were an alarm bell for the ruling conservatives. “Clearly, the ND MPs are well aware of the anti-vaxxers,” he said. “The government and [Prime Minister Kyriakos] Mitsotakis are entirely responsible for this mobilization,” as its botched vaccination rollout policy he said, has “sabotaged” the inoculation endeavor.

Teen shots. A platform to book Covid-19 vaccinations opened yesterday for 15- to 17-yearolds. Appointments on the emvolio.gov.gr website can be made by their parents using their Taxisnet credentials, and they will also have to accompany the youngsters to the inoculation center.

A 45-year-old man was sentenced yesterday to two life terms and seven years by the Mixed Jury Court of Thessaloniki for burning his 87-year-old father to death using gasoline, while his 81-year-old mother also died a month later from severe burns. The incident occurred last year on Easter Sunday in the Thessaloniki apartment where the perpetrator lived with his parents and his 46-year-old brother.

The court unanimously found him guilty of intentional homicide and arson, without recognizing any mitigating factors.
