SYRIZA losing voters in all directions
Leftist main opposition suffers spillover to other parties, mostly to center-right New Democracy
The loss of 12 points by SYRIZA, compared to the previous election, which constitutes a negative record for a party in opposition, has put it, and its leadership, on the back foot, with large spillovers to other parties.
As suggested by the results, 10% of its voters leaked to center-left PASOK, 5% to communist KKE, 3.3% to leftist MeRA25 and 3.4% to Nationalist Greek Solution. The largest percentage of voters in 2019, however, moved toward ruling New Democracy (11%).
Indeed, a qualitative analysis of the ballots cast can in many ways explain ND's sweeping victory by more than 20 points, as it dominated in all age and professional groups.
The percentages achieved by New Democracy among the younger age groups, over which SYRIZA was considered to have the upper hand these days, were particularly noteworthy. In the 17-24 age category, which includes first-time voters, ND received 32.5%, SYRIZA 22.7%, and PASOK 10.5%.
ND received 30.5% of the vote in the 25-34 age bracket, SYRIZA 21.2%, and PASOK 10.8%. In the 35-44 age range, ND received 34.1%, SYRIZA 21.8%, and PASOK 11.6%, while in the 45-54 age group, ND received 45.4% and
SYRIZA 17%, and in the 55-64 age group, ND received 42.6% and SYRIZA 18.9%.
For its part, ND, which rallied its base to a rate that reached 80%, received 11% from SYRIZA and 14% from PASOK. In addition, it also received double-digit votes from Greek Solution and MeRA25.
As for professional groups, ND dominated in all except students, while even among the unemployed it came out on top, which means that the positive narrative worked, as it gave more prospects than SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras' negative narrative. Specifically, the ruling party got 33.7% of the vote, compared to 26% for SYRIZA and 9.5% for PASOK. The results among self-employed professionals were sweeping, a development to which the misguided statement on taxes and social insurance by Giorgos Katrougalos contributed. In this category, ND won by more than 40 points, with 54.8% against 13.3% for SYRIZA and 9.2% for PASOK. This is the largest increase compared to 2019 as it received 10 points more, while SYRIZA lost 13 points compared to the previous election. ND also won among farmers, fishermen and civil servants. SYRIZA won the private sector by a slim margin.
