GRADE 5 MATHEMATICS
members? ………….... Are the members identical? ....... …
Sets which are equal have identical members The members of the two sets are same. The members can be arranged in any order. Sets A and B are equal sets. Set A = Set B. Thes sets have five identical members. Set C = Set D. These sets have three identical members.
EQUIVALENT SETS
T = {4, 5, 6, 7} empty set.
This is represented by { } or Ф e.g. P = {prime numbers less than 2} = { }
STUDY THIS EXAMPLE: Example:
Exercise 1 C = {4, 5,7}
Sets C and D are neither equal nor equivalent. They do not have the same number of members. Set C has three members and Set D has 2 members.
Determine whether the following sets are equal/ equivalent/ neither equal nor equivalent or Null.
List a reason or reasons for your answer. 1. A = {3, 2, 1}
3. K = { w, e, r } Z = {factors of 16} 2. X = {2, 4, 6, 8}
B = {1, 2, 3} H = {8,9,10,11}
4. R = {odd whole number < 1}
5. A = {0, 22, 15, 9} 6. M = {9, 10, 45, 13} K={even counting number <1} X = {15, 9} V = {x, y, z, w}
Write two pairs of equivalent sets and two pairs of equal sets.
