Western Tigers in lopsided win over youthful Pele side

West Ruimveldt giant Western Tigers and Kitty based unit Northern Rangers secured contrastin­g quarterfin­al victories when the Corona Beer Invitation­al Football championsh­ips continued Friday.

Western Tigers made light work of a youthful Pele unit, easing to a 6-0 victory at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda.

The contest was over before the commenceme­nt of the second period as the Tigers entered the halftime interval firmly in control with the score locked at 3-0. Dellon Kelly started the rout though a ninth minute strike.

Jamal Pedro doubled the lead, etching his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 30th minute. The perfect first half was sealed two minutes onward, as Darren Benjamin netted his first of two goals.

The lopsided contest continued in the second period, with a further three goals being recorded through Jarel Tyrell, Benjamin and Mark Gittens. Tyrell made it 4-0 10 minutes into the resumption of play, while Benjamin completed his brace with a 72nd minute effort.

The score line was sealed three minutes later when Gittens scored. Meanwhile, Northern Rangers edged fierce rival Camptown 4-3 on penalty kicks, after regulation and extra time ended 1-1 in the always physical ‘Kitty/Campbellvi­lle derby.

Sunil Logan handed Northern Rangers the lead compliment­s of a 19th minute conversion. However, Camptown leveled proceeding­s in the 41st minute when Richie Richards found the back of the net.

The two winners will now await the winner of the other two quarterfin­al matches today at the same venue. At 19:00hrs, Santos will oppose Guyana Police Force, while GFC will engage Riddim Squad at 21:00hrs.
