-

Hello Boys and Girls!

I hope everyone is safe and well. Are you focusing on your school work? This week we will review basic facts about Decimals.

What is a Decimal?

A decimal is a way of writing a number that is not whole. Decimal numbers are ‘in between’ numbers. For example, 10.4 is in between the numbers 10 and 11. It is more than 10, but less than 11.

Look at the number lines below. What do you notice?

You should notice that there are numbers with points between the whole numbers.

For example: 0.5 comes half way between 0 and 1. 1.5 comes half way between 1 and 2. 2.5 comes half way between 2 and 3. 3.5 comes half way between 3 and 4 4.5 comes half way between 4 and 5.

The point is called a decimal point and the numbers after the point are called

Decimals are another way of expressing fractions.

Decimals are a way to show numbers less than one. Place value shows the value of each number after the decimal point, such as tenths, hundredths and thousandths. When reading a number, the decimal point means ‘and’.

Some important points to note are:

● Numbers one place after the decimal point are in the tenths place. ● Numbers two places after the decimal point are in the hundredths place. ● Numbers three places after the decimal point are in the thousandths place. decimals.

Look carefully at the decimal chart shown below. It shows us the place value of both whole numbers and fractions.

The chart below is a decimal place value chart. Pay keen attention to the headings.

Let us now complete a written task.

Write the value and place value of each digit in the following numbers in headed columns as shown above. (Express the value of those numbers after the decimal point in decimal form)

Boys and Girls, please challenge yourselves all correct. Bye, until next week! BE SAFE!
