Shuman says threatened with victimization over Facebook posts

-

Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Lenox Shuman has said that he has been threatened with victimization following posts he made on Facebook.

In a post on his Facebook page late Thursday night, Shuman stated that two prior posts he made yielded “intimidation and threats” that ranged from the possibility of being fired from his role as the ministerial advisor on aviation to being barred from accessing government services.

“There is already an interruption to doing business as I know it. At this point, I have not received threats to my life, but I have not ruled it out,” he wrote, before later noting that he has registered his concerns with the international missions present in the country.

Over the past week, Shuman has come under fire from government supporters after he weighed on the recently announced 7% pay increase for public servants.

He, however, did not specify which posts triggered the threats and efforts to contact him about the post were unsuccessful.

He mentioned that the intimidation included him being sidelined and blocked from doing business or executing anything in his name.

“We all have rights enshrined in the constitution of Guyana to Freedom of

Political Association, Freedom of Speech, and to live in a safe environment among many others,” he wrote. “No person should ever live in Fear!” he added.

Shuman, who was elected Deputy Speaker with the help of the government members in the National Assembly, is the Member of Parliament for the list-joinder parties that comprise his Liberty and Justice Party, A New and United Guyana and The New Movement.
