—club preparing for upcoming ICC U19 World Cup

Timothy Tucker was reelected as president of the Georgetown Cricket Club when the club elected office bearers for the new term, October 2021 to September 2023.

Ramsay Alli is the vice president as all the executive members from the previous term were re-elected when the clubs held its biennial general meeting and election of office bearers on December 6.

According to a release from the club, approximat­ely 50 persons were present at the elections where Attorney-at-Law, Dave Kissoon served as Returning Officer.

The other reelected office bearers were Jameel Baksh, secretary, Gavin Ramsoondar, treasurer and Richard Jodha, Club Captain.

The committee members are Philip Fernandes, Johnathan Yearwood and Nadira Jaikarran.

According to the release, President Tucker’s report highlighti­ng the club’s activities of the past year

over the year, pointing out the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and climatic conditions.

According to the president, the club had a fairly good year although the number of matches held were limited by the above factors.

“The club’s finances were also presented and accepted. One of the primary tasks of the new executive is to prepare the club for the upcoming regional cricket tournament­s,” the release stated.

Formerly the mecca of cricket in Guyana, the club’s position as the number one test match venue was taken over by the Providence National Stadium but according to the release, the club has been identified as a possible practice venue for the ICC Under-19 World Cup Cricket tournament which starts in January 2022.

“To this end, the club is working closely with the Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and Ministry of Public Works for assistance following the continuous flooding of the ground.

“Thus far, the external drains have been cleaned. The government is also supporting the club with much-needed repairs to the main pavilion along with the players’ dressing rooms, the release stated.
