Parfait Harmonie taxi driver gets six years for armed robberies

A taxi-driver has been sentenced to six years in jail after he admitted to committing a series of armed robberies.

Ally-Seepaul handed down the sentence.

Jowanza admitted to armed robberies that occurred between November 26, 2021 and January 3, 2022 and was sentenced to six years and six months in jail.

According to a police report, the man was arrested on January 3, for the robberies. He was taken to the La Grange Police Station after police acting on informatio­n received went to his home and found a quantity of stolen items including 14 handbags, one fake licensed number plate, two Samsung cellphones, one tablet and a Bluetooth speaker.

The virtual complainan­ts were Basmattie Surjpaul, 21, a clerk of Tuschen New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo; Melenda Alli, 23, a clerk of Tuschen New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo; Budindra Basdeo, 18, a lab technician of Ruimzigt, West Coast Demerara; and Tamika Bidder, 21, of De Willem, West Coast Demerara. They all positively identified Jowanza as their assailant.
