Over 100 students participat­ing in online chess programme

Over 100 students aged seven to 15 years old are benefittin­g from a comprehens­ive online programme, conducted by the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF), to learn and study the game of chess.

The GCF’s online chess programme has commenced for 2022 and so far 20 schools have registered. The Bishops’ High, through its physical education teacher Daniel Benjamin, and the Anna Regina Secondary, through its headmaster Lalljeet Rooplall, are the latest schools to join the initiative. Older students are also invited to attend the online classes, according to a press release from the GCF. The chess programme began last Sunday and will last for the next six weeks.

Meanwhile, the GCF’s online National Under-12 seven-round Rapid Championsh­ip was played yesterday. It was sponsored by De Sinco Trading Limited which contribute­d $150,000 for prizes. Chief Executive Officer Alicia DeAbreu commented in part: “We are a company that strongly believes in giving back to the community in which we operate. We are proud to add this partnershi­p to our corporate social responsibi­lities which we have done over the years. 2022 will be no different and we are committed whenever and wherever our help is needed.”
