Rain forces GCA to abort weekend fixtures

The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) was yesterday forced to postpone its return to cricket weekend due to rain.

Overnight rain ensured most of the city’s grounds were under water resulting in chairman of GCA’s competitions committee, Shaun Massiah to make the announcement yesterday.

According to Massiah, it was unfortunate since the matches scheduled were highly anticipated as cricket has been absent for nearly two years in the country’s capital.

While it was not disclosed, Massiah said that further information will be given soon as to the way forward pertaining to those matches.

The matches scheduled for the weekend included semi-final action in the GISE/Star Party Rental/Trophy Stall firstdivision two-day tournament where Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) were expected to host Police Sports Club and Everest Cricket Club expected to host Demerara Cricket Club (DCC).

Both matches were tipped to be action packed with the venues being in pristine condition having benefitted from an upgrade on the heels of the ICC under-19 World Cup recently.

Among those listed were DCC giants, Christopher Barnwell and Trevon Griffith along with Everest’s Matthew Nandu fresh from his Under-19 World Cup stint, Amir Khan, Rajendra Chandrika and Richie Looknauth.

GCC’s Devon Lord, Mavindra Dindyal, Winston Forrester and Ronaldo Alimohamed as well as Police’s Kevon

Boodie, Ronsford Beaton, Quinten Sampson and Kemol Savory were also projected to feature.

Also booked at DCC was a friendly match between the GCA’s 20-man under15 squad and a Berbice XI in preparation of the Demerara Cricket Board InterAssociation and Guyana Cricket Board under-15 tournaments.
